Mayorga African Blend Review

Mayorga Coffee Roasters is a Rockville, MD based coffee roaster. They offer variety of coffees from all the major regions. Like many other local roasters they focus on sourcing directly from the farmer and sustainable practices.

From the roaster:  Full body with hints of cocoa and a bold, stout finish.

Method:  French press, I tried various extraction times but the results were pretty much the same across the board.

Review and tl;dr after the jump...

Appearance (16/20):  The bean is paper bag brown with a dull exterior.

Smell (16/20):  There was nothing especially unique about the dry grounds smell but there was a slight cereal, grain smell to it. You can smell the brightness right off the bat once you wet the grounds and can tell its going to have that bright stone fruit-like flavor.

Taste (15/20):  Although the stone fruit tinge is present it doesn't make for a very juicy cup. The flavor is mild and pleasant but it lacks a certain depth I usually associate with African beans. A cooler cup brings out some of the cocoa/stout notes the roaster suggests but the predominant flavor is fruit.

Mouthfeel (14/20):  Its not a very oily coffee so there isn't much mouthfeel to it, but the cup definitely isn't watery.

Overall (14/20): Mayorga Africa Blend is very easy on the palate and it would be great as a breakfast coffee but I didn't find new levels of flavor after multiple tastings. It might benefit from a higher coffee to water ratio but I didn't want to stray from the method I had been using for other coffee reviews.

Score: 75

TL;DR - A mild, easy-drinking coffee, perfect for those looking for sour fruit notes.
