Mayorga 100% Organic Nicaragua Cinco de Junio Review

Mayorga Coffee Roasters is a Rockville, MD based coffee roaster. They offer variety of coffees from all the major regions. Like many other local roasters they focus on sourcing directly from the farmer and sustainable practices.

From the roaster:  Medium body with hints of toasted almonds and a long-lasting, bold finish.

Method:  French press

Several roasters (Counter Culture for example) deal directly with the Cinco de Junio co-op and I would be interested in trying their roasts against Mayorga's. I'll probably do a head-to-head Counter Culture vs. Mayorga post in the near future but for now on with the review!

Review and tl;dr after the jump...

Appearance (20/20):  The bean has a slick exterior, very dark, very glossy.

Smell (12/20):  Its got a popcorn-like smell, probably because of the oiliness of the bean. The smell isn't bad but its not all that appealing to me.

Taste (16/20):  The boldness of the roast is always present but there is never any bitterness associated with it. There are a few complexities to the taste with a hint of citrus peel and a slight floral note followed by a tropical fruit aftertaste.

Mouthfeel (18/20):  Definitely a thicker, chewier mouthfeel than Mayorga's Africa Blend. This makes for a more full bodied cup that stands well on its own.

Overall (16/20): Mayorga's Cinco de Junio makes for a surprisingly complex cup of coffee. At first it seems like a pretty standard dark roast but the other subtle flavors really sneak up on you. I'm excited to try brewing this one with different methods and I'll post a mini-review when I do.

Score: 82

TL;DR - A complex dark roast where the flavors aren't deep but they are varied.
